Garlic is very healthy. A lot has been said and written about this. However, it is worth noting separately the fact that its daily use is an effective means of preventing strokes. 1-2 teeth per day will solve this problem. Garlic will be doubly useful if grown in your garden.
Garlic harvesting does not need to be complicated. On the Internet there are ways to harvest garlic from the beds for winter storage, in which there is a lot of excess. Cleaning can be done without unnecessary manipulation, saving time.

When to clean?

If garlic is planted in late April - early May, the estimated harvesting time will be August 10. It is not necessary to withstand a period of 100 days, as indicated in many articles. To delay with cleaning or in a hurry is also not worth it.
If the cleaning is done ahead of time, then the heads that do not have time to form will simply dry out during storage. If you significantly tighten the cleaning, the heads, opening in the ground, will begin to sprout.
If you choose from two erroneous cleaning options (sooner or later), it is better to be a little late with the cleaning than to remove it early. An unformed garlic head is guaranteed to dry out, if not in the fall, then at the beginning of winter.
Do not be afraid that the heads of garlic will open in the ground quickly. They can be in the soil for quite some time. Many of them do not open and do not germinate until next spring. Even if the head opened, but did not have time to germinate, it will be stored much longer unripe.
It is not necessary to wait for the lodging of the stems. In large heads, the stems, even yellowed, can stand for a long time. Yellowing of the stems should not serve as a signal for harvesting. The tops of the stems may turn yellow at the beginning of summer, then heatwaves (they will not affect the yield).
The cleaning time depends on the following factors:
  • 1. Planting time in spring. Warm spring allows you to plant garlic earlier, in mid-April, and he is not afraid of return cold and frost.
  • 2. If the summer is hot, the garlic will ripen faster.
  • 3. Heavy rains in summer accelerate ripening.

Cleaning

You need to choose a sunny, hot day. To dig out garlic, it is more convenient to use a small spatula. Pull it out will not work, the stems will break. It is inconvenient to use a large shovel. With a small spatula, each head is hooked under the root and pulled out.
When all the garlic in the bed is dug up, you can immediately cut the stems and roots. There are many articles in which it is recommended to leave roots and stems. Dry the garlic with roots and stems for a week or 10 days, referring to the fact that the nutrients will "pass" from uncircumcised stems and roots to the head.

In fact, the head is already formed. Uncirculated stems and roots on the head itself will not have any additional improving effect. Extra procedures will only take time.
Garlic will be perfectly stored if you immediately cut off all unnecessary scissors on the bed. Trim carefully, leaving a little (2 cm) of the stem and half a centimeter of roots. End-to-end cutting is not worth it, especially the stem. You can damage the tops of the cloves.
After the garlic is dug up, all the excess from the heads is cut off, it must lie in the sun until the evening. So it will dry completely.

In the evening (you can right on the bed), garlic is distributed over long narrow nets. It is necessary to separate the seed material from the garlic, which will be used.

Storage

The main reason for the successful storage of garlic is that it is stored in a long and narrow grid.

It is not necessary to ram it strongly into the net; it must lie there freely so that air circulates between the heads. In such nets, garlic can be sent for storage directly from the garden (having dried slightly in the sun).

Nets with garlic can be hung anywhere, the main thing is to keep it dry. Permanent storage places can be: house, basement, underground. Temporarily, until the onset of cold, garlic can be placed in a barn or under a canopy.

This method of cleaning and storage has been tested for decades by practice. You can send garlic for storage directly from the garden. Excessive chores are excluded, no hassle!
